Renewing Your Residency Card (TIE) in Spain: Timing and Documents
The first residency card usually lasts a year, then renewals run for two years at a time. The process is routine — but it has one trap that costs people not a card but years: continuity. A gap between cards can reset the clock you are accumulating towards permanent residency and citizenship.
When to apply
The window opens 60 days before your card expires and closes 90 days after. So a late application is not fatal, with two caveats: filing after expiry can attract a fine, and while the decision is pending you are legal in Spain but cannot easily leave and re-enter without an additional document.
Practical advice: file in the first days of the window, not the last. Appointment slots are the bottleneck, and waiting for one eats weeks.
What you need
- The application form matching your residency type — each has its own;
- passport plus copies of every page;
- your current TIE;
- a recent padrón certificate, usually no more than three months old — see what the padrón is;
- proof of your grounds — the same category as your original application: income, employment, self-employment, study or savings;
- health insurance, still with no copays or waiting periods — see what qualifies;
- paid fee (modelo 790);
- if employed or autónomo, social security contribution records.
How it goes
- File in person by appointment or online with a digital certificate.
- Receive the resguardo — the receipt that proves your legal status while the case is open.
- Wait for the decision: typically one to three months, longer in busy provinces.
- Book the fingerprint appointment (toma de huellas).
- Collect the new card 30–45 days later.
Why gaps are expensive
Permanent residency after five years and citizenship after ten both require continuous legal residence. If a gap opens between one card expiring and the next beginning, the count can start again — see our guide to Spanish citizenship. You are not renewing plastic; you are renewing your accumulated time.
The second common loss is long absences. For permanent residency you generally must not be outside Spain for more than six months at a stretch, or ten months in total over five years. Extended summers abroad add up faster than people expect.
What usually goes wrong
- No appointment. Slots vanish within minutes, exactly as with getting a NIE. Start looking two months out.
- Lapsed or non-compliant insurance.
- An old padrón certificate — renew it before filing rather than reusing last year's.
- Address changed but padrón not updated — the mismatch is spotted immediately.
The language part
No Spanish exam is required to renew residency — that appears only at the citizenship stage. But the whole procedure runs in Spanish: booking, forms, the conversation at the counter, follow-up calls. People who never learned the language pay a gestor every renewal for something that takes half an hour. And since citizenship later requires DELE A2, building the level gradually across those years is cheaper than cramming it at the end.
Frequently asked questions
How early can I renew my TIE?
Sixty days before the expiry date, and the application is still accepted for ninety days afterwards. File early: the limiting factor is the appointment queue, not the paperwork, and in Madrid or Barcelona finding a slot can take several weeks on its own.
What happens if my card expires before the new one arrives?
Nothing, provided you filed within the window. The resguardo receipt proves you are legally resident while the case is processed. Travelling in and out of Spain during that period is the awkward part and may require an additional return authorisation.
Does a gap between cards affect citizenship?
It can. Citizenship requires continuous legal residence, so a break in your card chain may restart the count — which is why renewing on time matters far more than the card itself. Keep every resguardo and card as proof of an unbroken sequence.
