Spanish Citizenship: Requirements, Timeline and the Exams You Need
Spanish citizenship is the end of a long road, and most of the confusion around it comes from one fact people discover late: the required residence period is not the same for everyone. It ranges from two years to ten depending on where you were born.
How many years of residence you need
| Your situation | Years of legal residence |
|---|---|
| Citizens of Latin American countries, Portugal, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, and Sephardic Jews | 2 |
| Married to a Spanish citizen | 1 |
| Born in Spain | 1 |
| Refugees | 5 |
| Everyone else | 10 |
The years must be legal, continuous and immediately before the application. Time on a student visa counts only partially, which is why the route you enter Spain on matters years later — see our comparison of Spanish visas.
The two exams
Unless you are from a Spanish-speaking country, you must pass both:
- DELE A2 — the language exam, at the most basic level: introduce yourself, handle everyday situations, understand simple texts. It has no expiry date. What A2 actually means in practice is covered in our guide to the Spanish level required for residency and citizenship.
- CCSE — a 25-question test on Spanish constitution, culture and society, taken on a computer, 60 minutes, pass mark 15 correct answers. Questions come from a published bank of 300, so preparation is memorisation rather than understanding. Details in our CCSE guide.
Both are run by the Instituto Cervantes. The CCSE certificate is valid for four years; DELE never expires.
Documents
- Valid TIE (residency card) covering the whole qualifying period;
- Birth certificate, apostilled and translated by a sworn translator;
- Criminal record certificates from Spain and from your country of origin;
- Certificado de empadronamiento — see what the padrón is;
- DELE A2 and CCSE certificates;
- Proof of integration and means of support — employment, autónomo activity, pension or savings.
How long it takes
The application is filed electronically. By law the authorities have one year to decide; in practice most cases resolve in one to three years, and the backlog varies enormously by province. After approval you swear allegiance to the Constitution and the King within 180 days, then register the citizenship and apply for a DNI and passport.
Do you lose your original citizenship?
Spain formally requires renouncing your previous nationality, except for citizens of Latin American countries, Portugal, Andorra, the Philippines and Equatorial Guinea, who keep both. In practice the renunciation is a declaration made before the Spanish registrar, and whether your home country recognises it is a separate matter governed by its own law. This is the point where people most often need a lawyer rather than a guide.
Where people lose years
- Gaps in residence. A late renewal or months spent outside Spain can reset the clock. Keep the chain of cards unbroken.
- Leaving the exams to the end. DELE sessions are held on fixed dates and results take two to three months. Plan them a year before you qualify, not after.
- Expired CCSE. It lasts four years — passing it too early means paying again.
- Not being on the padrón at the addresses you actually lived at.
A note on the language requirement
DELE A2 is deliberately low: Spain asks for basic communication, not fluency. The mistake is treating it as a formality to cram at the last minute. A2 from zero takes roughly 150–200 hours, and people who postpone it end up rescheduling their whole application around exam dates. Starting early costs nothing extra and removes the one part of the process that is entirely within your control.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to live in Spain to apply for citizenship?
Ten years for most nationalities, but only two for citizens of Latin American countries, Portugal, Andorra, the Philippines and Equatorial Guinea, and one year if you are married to a Spanish citizen or were born in Spain. The residence must be legal and continuous right up to the application.
What level of Spanish do I need for citizenship?
DELE A2 — a basic level covering everyday situations. Citizens of Spanish-speaking countries are exempt. A2 from scratch takes about 150–200 hours of study, so it is best started at least a year before you plan to apply, since exam dates are fixed and results take months.
Can I keep my current passport?
Spain formally requires renouncing your previous nationality, with an exception for Latin American countries, Portugal, Andorra, the Philippines and Equatorial Guinea. Whether your home country treats the Spanish declaration as an actual loss of citizenship depends on its own laws, so check both sides before applying.
